So the cold-hearted father and brother of Aqsa Parvez pleaded out to murder two and will likely get ten years each. That is completely unacceptable, certainly for an honour killing which by strict definition should be a hate crime under Canadian law. The cowards should each be required to serve twenty years each -- and then deported. As I wrote over a year and a half ago on this, honour killings "in the name of Islam" -- or any religion for that matter -- are as un-Canadian as it gets; not to mention that it also goes against the religion that the men claim to practice.
Go ahead, Osama, declare a fatwa against me. See if I care. Like I matter in the grand scheme of things. Despite what you may think, women on the other hand do matter a great deal. You wouldn't be here if it wasn't for one, after all.

Its not quite accurate that they will get ten years. They have plead guilty to second degree murder which means life in prison with no chance of parole for 10-25 years (the length of parole ineligibility has not been set yet in this case). So they will be under the jurisdiction of the state for the rest of their lives. While they may get out in ten years (we still don't know yet) they won't get out as of right, and could be sent back quickly.
... not that I necessarily agree with the state of the law. Just that I think you are misinformed on that issue.
Sickening isn't it?
Progressive justice at its absolute worst.
How about a minimum of 25 years in a Canadian prison, then deportation. Hopefully they will be on the recieveing end of much prison hopitality from their fellow inmates. Or they can choose surgical castration and immediate deportation to Pakistan.
The whole thing makes me furious. I'm pretty progressive but on this one we Canadians all must take a hard line. What makes it even worse is when the matriarchs of the family either defend the actions of their husbands and sons, or commit the crime themselves (as seems to be the case with a recent similiar matter in Montréal.
This isn't about so-called "reasonable accomodations." When it comes to freedom of speech and the equality of women, that trumps everything else. There is and can never be any compromise on that.
