Breaking: Ted Stevens, loses Senate seat? Wunnerful, wunnerful!

From the AP, Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich now has an insurmountable lead of 3,724 --since there are only 2500 ballots left to be counted. One (Alaska) down, two (Georgia, Minnesota) to go!

Also, Stevens said he will not seek a pardon from Dubya. I don't think Shrub would want to give him one anyway.

The reason, I think, that Stevens won't ask for a pardon from Bush is that he intends to fight all the convictions AND also try to fight for a recount as he will want to stay in "power". It's the only life he knows - even if he is now 85 years of age.

So asking for a pardon is admitting guilt.

On the recount, I understand the final gap between Begich and Stevens is beyond that where a recount would be automatic; so Stevens would have to pay for one. Sure he can afford it, but with the price of Alaska oil tanking (no pun intended) to below $50 yesterday and people in the state starting to feel the effects of the slowdown I wonder if Stevens wants to put his fellow citizens through the wringer like that.

As for the pardon issue, I have to agree. He comes from a time when graft was totally acceptable. He doesn't seem like the kind who would apologize for anything -- a couple of the DC jurors commented yesterday that his combative nature during the trial made up their minds for them.

My thought on this is that Bush doesn't want to have a Bill Clinton / Mark Rich situation on his hand -- which must also be weighing on Obama's mind as he mulls over a Cabinet post for Hillary.

All good points Robert. You are most likely correct about his not doing a recount & his combative nature, as you put it, will most likely have him in court fighting all the convictions. Certain mind set & generational view.
